Explanation

This verse directly states the way to gather kin: giving and sweet speech. One who can do both will be surrounded by kin 'adukkiya', in layers, that is, kin that spread as circle upon circle.

Giving is helping others with material things. It is not only money; food, shelter, time, knowledge and support are all giving. Everyone approaches a giver. But giving alone is not enough; sweet speech is needed with it. If one gives harshly, the receiver's heart is hurt.

Sweet speech is pleasant, loving and respectful talk. Sometimes a kind word is worth more than a big gift. When one gives with sweet words, the receiver sees the leader not as a creditor but as a loved one.

When both join, relationship grows in layers. In the first circle are siblings, in the next relatives, in the next friends, in the next villagers. Thus a web of love forms around a person.

So gathering kin needs no special talent; two simple qualities are enough: a giving hand and a sweet tongue. If these are cultivated, a person will not be lonely.

It is a simple principle fit for the head of a family, the head of an organisation and the social worker alike.

A story

Karna, Surrounded by Generosity

From the Mahabharata: Karna is famed as 'danasura', a great giver. After his morning worship of the Sun he had a vow to give whatever anyone asked without refusal. He was king of Anga. Duryodhana had made him king by giving him Anga. Karna never forgot that gratitude.

Karna's generosity was excellent in two ways. First, he showed no regret over what he gave. Second, he gave with kind words so that the asker's feelings were not hurt. Once to a brahmin who came to him he gave his golden armour and earrings. Knowing that they were the armour that protected his life, he gave them gladly to the brahmin.

Even knowing that the brahmin was really Indra, Karna did not break his word. He sent Indra away without hatred and with kind words. This giving and sweet speech of Karna brought him great fame.

Because of such nature, friends, warriors and kings stood around Karna in numbers. Duryodhana regarded him as a life-friend. The people of Anga respected him with love. In war many warriors were ready to give their lives for Karna.

Though Karna fell through some wrong decisions, his giving and sweet speech created a circle of kin around him. Even today we call a generous giver 'Karna'.

Karna is a living example that giving and sweet speech make one surrounded by kin.

To reflect on

Do you give with a sweet word, or do you sometimes give in a way that makes the receiver feel small?
