Explanation

The previous verse spoke of removing the grievance of separated kin and winning them back. This verse tells how to accept one who left and later returns for some reason. He should not be accepted at once with full trust but only after careful consideration, says Valluvar.

'Uzhaip pirindhu' is to have moved away from one's side. 'Kaaranaththin vandhaan' is one who has come back on account of some reason. That reason may be love, or his own need, or the instigation of an enemy. Knowing which is the leader's duty.

In the previous verse he spoke of those who return without cause. Here he speaks of those who return with a cause. They are different. The first kind come from love in the heart; the second come having some benefit in mind. Caution is needed in accepting the second kind.

'Izhaiththirundhu ennik kolal' is to sit calmly, examine deeply and then accept. It is to think clearly, not hastily or emotionally. Even when accepting, the responsibility given and the trust placed in him can be kept in measure.

This is not advice to hate people. It is advice that balances compassion and vigilance. Accepting the one who returns and then, in time, raising trust as his conduct is seen, is the best way.

It applies in politics, family and work alike.

A story

Yuyutsu Who Crossed Over Before the War

From the Mahabharata (Bhishma Parva): It was the hour when the Kurukshetra war was to begin. The two armies stood arrayed. Then Yudhishthira got down from his chariot, went toward the Kaurava army, and bowed to elders such as Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and Shalya and received their blessings. Then he made a call in a loud voice to the Kaurava army.

"Whoever wishes to come to my side may come. I shall accept him as my kinsman," he said. Hearing the call, Yuyutsu, one of Dhritarashtra's sons, came forward. He was Dhritarashtra's son by a Vaishya woman, a younger brother of Duryodhana. Firm in the path of dharma, he decided that he could not stand on the unjust side.

Yudhishthira welcomed him gladly. But he did not at once give him a great responsibility. Though Yudhishthira knew Yuyutsu had a dharmic reason for coming, he still acted with caution. First he entrusted him with watching over the army's weapons, food and supplies. After seeing his valour and conduct in the war, his trust became firm.

Yuyutsu served the Pandavas faithfully in the war. He never betrayed them. After the war he assisted Dhritarashtra in looking after the governance. Later, when Yudhishthira went to the Himalaya, he appointed Yuyutsu himself as guardian to Parikshit. It was the reward for the trust he proved in the war.

So Yudhishthira's practice, of examining one who joined even for a reason and then granting trust step by step, is a good example. Love and caution were together.

This event is a fine working form of 'izhaiththirundhu ennik kolal'.

To reflect on

When someone who left returns, can you welcome them warmly and still give trust back in steps as they earn it?
