Cherishing Kinsmen · Sutrandhazhaal

This chapter says that cherishing one's kin and associates with love is the true use of wealth. Kin gather round one who gives, speaks sweetly and does not rage; the life of one without kin is like a tank without bunds, says Valluvar.

Introduction

The chapter 'Therindhu Vinaiyaadal' taught how to choose and employ workers. The next chapter, 'Sutrandhazhaal', is about embracing and cherishing the kinsmen and associates who surround the ruler. 'Sutram' means those who are around: siblings, relatives, friends, ministers and servants. 'Thazhaal' means to embrace and take close.

A person's strength lies not only in his personal ability but in the love and support of the people around him. A leader cannot fight alone or rule alone. The strength of the kin standing by him is his strength. So protecting one's kin is a basic duty of governance.

The first verse says that those who do not forget old affection even when attachment has ended are the kindred. The second says that kin whose love does not diminish bring great prosperity. The third says that the life of one who does not mingle with relatives is like a tank without bunds. The fourth says being surrounded by kin is the use of wealth. The fifth and sixth say that giving, sweet speech and absence of rage gather kin. The seventh praises the habit of sharing through the crow's simile. The eighth says all should not be viewed alike but according to merit. The ninth and tenth tell how to behave when estranged kin return.

This chapter fits not only kings but also the head of a family. A family becomes strong when its members support one another with love. One with wealth but without relations suffers in loneliness. One with less wealth but full of kin lives happily.

Valluvar names two instruments to cherish kin: giving and sweet speech. Sharing goods and speaking kindly are simple acts. Yet they tighten the threads of relationship. He also says that anger must be controlled. Harsh words and rage can split a relationship in a moment.

The last part of the chapter is very practical. Relatives separated by disagreement may come back; knowing the reason, they may be accepted again. But the acceptance should be with thought and caution. It balances love and knowledge.

On the whole, the chapter teaches that kinship is a wealth and that a leader must strive to create and protect it. One who gives, speaks sweetly, controls anger, respects merit and accepts the estranged will never be abandoned by his kin.

Chapter story

Krishna's Words to Narada

From the Mahabharata (Shanti Parva): After the Kurukshetra war, in the days when Yudhishthira had become king, the sage Narada once came to Dwaraka. Krishna received and honoured him. The sage asked Krishna, "What is your worry? Tell me what I can do." Then Krishna told him his heart's complaint about his Yadava clan.

Krishna said, "Sage, I give half my wealth to my kin and enjoy the rest. Like a servant I serve them. I also bear their harsh words. Yet they do not show me full love. On one side Balarama takes pride in strength; on the other Pradyumna takes pride in beauty. I am caught between the two."

He continued, "One section of the Yadavas is on one side, another on the other. Whom shall I support? If I support one, the other will resent it. Between the two sides I suffer like a mother torn between two sons." This shows the sorrow in protecting one's kin.

Narada gave him counsel: "Speak gently to your relatives. Take their harsh words as water and do not keep them in mind. To defeat enemies one needs weapons of iron; but to bind kinsmen the tool of a soft word is enough. Join them to yourself by sharing wealth, patience and sweet speech."

Krishna accepted the counsel. By sharing, sweet speech and patience he kept the Yadava clan united for a long time. That was the era of Dwaraka's flourishing. The dialogue shows how hard it is to embrace and cherish kin, and that it is an important duty of a leader.

For even Krishna, who could rule the world, protecting kin was a challenge. It is a lesson to us: cherishing relationships is a work that demands continuous effort. Giving and sweet speech are its two pillars.

Narada's counsel, though it seems simple, is deep. By saying 'bind with words' he showed the power of the kind word. If a harsh word is useless even against enemies, how much harm will it do to relatives! If the leader controls his tongue, kinship does not break. A word may give fragrance like a flower or prick like a thorn. Speaking with that awareness is the first step in protecting kin.

It was a great quality that Krishna told the sage his sorrow without hiding it. Rather than keeping the difficulty with his kin to himself and grieving, he shared it with a wise person and sought a remedy. It teaches that a leader too must seek counsel. That he applied the advice in practice as soon as he received it is another merit.

Though quarrels existed in the Yadava clan, as long as Krishna lived they did not move towards destruction. The later part of the Mahabharata says that the clan destroyed itself only when he was no longer there. Where there is no leader to embrace and protect kin, even small cracks become great ruin. In that sense cherishing kin is the lifeline of a clan.

So this tale is a guide to the elders of a family and to the heads of associations. Problems in relationships are natural. But with sharing, kind words and patience they are resolved. This is the message Narada gave Krishna and Valluvar gives us.
