Explanation

What is the true use of wealth? Many think of it as consumption, luxury and saving. But Valluvar says: to live surrounded by kin is the real benefit of having acquired wealth. Wealth is an instrument; cherishing kin is its aim.

'Sutrathaal sutrappada ozhugal' is a beautiful construction: behaving so that one is encircled by kin. That is, to be a person whose conduct makes relatives stand around him of their own accord. This does not come by compulsion; it comes by his giving, sweet speech and humility.

With wealth one can build a mansion and buy clothes. But for the mansion to be full, one needs relatives who gather there gladly. One who keeps wealth to himself without sharing with relatives gains nothing though he has wealth.

Here Valluvar sets a higher aim for wealth. Wealth is gained not for selfishness but to support many. So a wealthy man should spend so that his kin rise.

The same idea is worthy of respect in today's world. One who earns moderately but lives happily with family and friends benefits more than one who earns much and lives lonely.

So the verse reminds us that what matters is less how much wealth we obtained than with whom we enjoy it.

A story

Rama's Gifts After Victory

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda): Having conquered Ravana and completed the fourteen years, Rama returned to Ayodhya and was crowned. That festival was the greatest in Ayodhya's history. The whole city was decked with festoons. On that day Rama did not keep his wealth for himself but shared it with those who had stood with him.

First Rama gave cows and gold as gifts to brahmins and sages. Then he gave rare ornaments and garments as gifts to Sugriva, Vibhishana, Angada, Jambavan, Nila, Nala and all the vanara chiefs who had helped him greatly. He honoured each by name with affection.

Sita took her pearl necklace and gave it to Hanuman. Hanuman accepted it but bit each pearl to see whether the name of Rama was in it; tradition says he declared that without Rama's name it was not wanted. Though this episode is not in Valmiki, it is a folk tradition showing Hanuman's devotion and Rama's love.

Rama dined and rejoiced at the same meal with his brothers Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Vanaras, rakshasas, relatives and citizens feasted in Ayodhya for many days. Sugriva and Vibhishana stayed there for several months and were entertained.

Thus Rama showed in practice that the use of his wealth was the joy of those around him. For that reason they stood around Rama all their lives. This is being surrounded by kin.

Rama's victory festival beautifully illustrates the use of wealth.
