The Possession of Decorum · Ozhukkamutaimai

This chapter teaches that good conduct brings honour and the dignity of a good family, and that it is to be guarded even more carefully than life. Lapses bring blame and sorrow, while steady conduct sows the seed of every good, as Valluvar shows through ten plain and forceful verses.

Introduction

After the Possession of Self-restraint comes the Possession of Decorum, Ozhukkam Utaimai. A person who has learnt to govern himself must next shape his daily conduct, and this is the natural progression of Valluvar's argument. Ozhukkam is not a handful of good deeds; it is the whole manner of a life. A householder is expected to stand as an example to his family and his community, which is why the chapter finds a central place in the section on domestic virtue.

The first four verses establish the worth of right conduct. The first says it brings honour and so must be guarded even more than life. The second says that however much one searches, no better companion can be found. The third says that conduct, not birth alone, decides whether a family is truly noble, and that a lapse can bring even a high-born person low. The fourth compares learning with conduct: a Veda that is forgotten can be learned again, but good conduct once lost is not easily regained.

The next five verses describe results. As prosperity does not stay with the envious, dignity does not stay with the ill-conducted. The resolute never swerve from right conduct because they know the grief that follows a lapse. Good conduct is the seed of all that is good, while bad conduct brings lasting sorrow. The last two verses touch speech and social grace: those of good conduct do not let foul words fall from their lips even by mistake, and those who learn many things but cannot live in harmony with the world are, in the end, unlearned.

To a modern ear the word conduct may sound old-fashioned. Yet trust, honesty, responsibility and gratitude, the foundations of every workplace and home, are all born of ozhukkam. A talented person who lacks integrity will not be trusted by an organisation, and a person of integrity with modest skill will usually grow. The conduct Valluvar praises is not a show for others but a steady inner way of living that does not change when no one is watching. It is the greatest inheritance we leave to our family and to the next generation.

Chapter story

Yudhishthira and the Dog

This story comes from the Mahaprasthanika Parva of the Mahabharata. After the war at Kurukshetra, the Pandavas ruled justly for many years. When news came that Krishna had left the world, the five brothers and Draupadi gave up the kingdom and set out for the Himalayas. A dog followed them. No one knew where it had come from, but Yudhishthira did not drive it away.

On the mountain path they fell one by one: first Draupadi, then Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna and Bhima. As each fell, Yudhishthira walked on, explaining to Bhima why each had fallen. At last he went on alone with only the dog. Then Indra came down from heaven in his chariot and called, "Yudhishthira, come to heaven in your own body."

Yudhishthira said, "This dog must come with me." Indra replied, "There is no place for dogs in heaven. You abandoned your brothers and your wife on the way; why hesitate to leave a dog?" Yudhishthira refused firmly: "This creature has come trusting me. To leave it and enjoy happiness alone would not be dharma. I do not want such happiness." Indra pressed him again and again, but he did not move from his stand.

Then the dog revealed its true form. It was Dharma himself, who had come as a dog to test Yudhishthira's conduct. He was delighted. "Earlier, in the forest, as a yaksha, and now again here, you have conquered me by never failing in your conduct."

Yudhishthira valued the trust of a dog above the joys of heaven, and his conduct won him the honour of entering the divine world in his own body. Even when he gave up his kingdom and lost his loved ones, he did not give up right conduct. His height came not from power but from the purity of his behaviour.

Yudhishthira's calm on that journey is also worth noting. As his brothers and wife fell one by one, he did not collapse in grief; he carried the sorrow in his heart and kept walking. He honestly accepted the reasons why each had fallen, according to tradition: Draupadi's special love for Arjuna, Sahadeva's pride in his wisdom, Nakula's pride in his beauty, Arjuna's pride in his valour, and Bhima's love of food and pride in his strength. He did not scorn these faults, only named them, and he did not hide his own weaknesses either. This honesty prepared him for the final test.

The story shows that ozhukkam is seen not only on great stages but in small decisions that no one watches. For Yudhishthira, the simple decency of not abandoning one who trusted him was dearer than life.
