Explanation

Valluvar calls the farmers the 'aani'. The aani is the linchpin that holds a chariot's axle in place. It is small, but if it comes off the chariot tilts. Though farmers may seem few and humble among the people, without them the chariot called the world does not stand: that is the subtlety of the image.

Commentators take 'adhu aatraadhu ezhuvaarai' to mean those who rise to other callings, being unable to do the work of tillage. The merchant, the craftsman, the king and the scholar all go to their own spheres. None has the power to grow food himself. 'Ellaam poruththu', bearing them all, is said of the farmers. 'Poruththu' carries both the sense of carrying a burden and of patience.

When the chapter gives the farmer words of praise, it is not flattery but plain truth. He supplies the foundation for a society's survival. Yet the esteem history has given him has often been small. Valluvar silently points to that injustice and tries to correct it. In today's world we all labour in different fields. But we are all in the class of 'ezhuvaar', dependent on farmers for food. To recognise that and give them fair prices and respect is our duty.

A story

Kundaiyur Kizhar

This is the story of Kundaiyur Kizhar from the Periya Puranam. Born into a farming family in the village of Kundaiyur, Kizhar owned wealth and land. He was a Shiva devotee and a friend of the Nayanar Sundaramurti, also called Nambi Arurar. While Sundarar stayed at Tiruvarur, Kizhar sent him paddy and pulses grown in his fields every year.

Sundarar used that food to feed devotees. Once the rains failed and the yield of the fields fell. Kizhar was deeply grieved. "How shall I send food to my friend Sundarar this year? The devotees will go hungry," he wept.

Seeing his sorrow, the Purana says, Lord Shiva decided to relieve it. By the Lord's grace paddy piled up in Kundaiyur like a hill. The heap was so vast that one man could not even move it. Kizhar stood astonished.

When Sundarar wondered how to bring that paddy to Tiruvarur, tradition says the Lord sent his attendant bhutas to carry all of it to Sundarar's house at Tiruvarur that very night. Next morning Sundarar was amazed to see hills of paddy around his home.

The story shows how high is the help a farmer gives to devotees of God. Sundarar and the devotees could worship because of the food from Kizhar's field. He grew the paddy, his friend sang, the devotees worshipped. The tilling bore it all.

When Valluvar called farmers 'the linchpin of the world', he may have had such great ones in mind. Though they do not take part directly in worship, music or kingship, they are the linchpin that holds all these up, and Kundaiyur Kizhar is a fine witness.
