Explanation

This verse gives the foundation for self-respect that farming provides. 'Uzhudhu undu vaazhvaare vaazhvaar' praises the independence of one who eats by his own labour. He who grows and eats with his own hands has to beg of no one and bow to no one. His food is the fruit of his toil, and so he lives with his head high.

In contrast, 'thozhudhu undu pinsel bavar' are those who rely on others and eat by their kindness. Some commentators think Valluvar speaks lowly here of living dependent on others. But it need not mean others live wrongly; it also states the truth that those in other trades depend on farmers for food.

The central message is the dignity of labour. It insists that living on one's own work is higher than living on another's. It chimes with the Hindu notion of svadharma, doing one's own duty oneself. One who eats by his own labour lives in dharma. Today not everyone needs to be a farmer. But we can ask whether our life is earned by our own hand or runs on another's favour. In whatever occupation, eating by our own labour is self-respect. So self-respecting life begins in labour, a point to hold in mind.

A story

Tiruneelakanta the Potter

This is the story of Tiruneelakanta Nayanar from the Periya Puranam. Born in a potter's family at Chidambaram, he lived by making earthen vessels. He was boundlessly devoted to Shiva. Ever uttering the Lord's holy name 'Tiruneelakantam', he made and sold pots, and lived on that labour.

He did a special service. Whenever Shiva devotees came, he made alms-bowls for them free of charge. Giving the vessels his own hands had made was his chief joy in life. He never begged of anyone.

The Lord wished to test his devotion and steadfastness. Coming as a Shiva devotee he gave Nayanar his alms-bowl to keep. "Hold this until I come and ask for it," he said. Nayanar placed it carefully in a certain spot.

The Lord, in the guise of the devotee, hid the bowl, then came and asked for it back. Finding the bowl gone, Nayanar was confounded. When he offered to give a new bowl, the devotee refused. In the end a dispute arose and Nayanar and his wife had to take an oath by bathing in the temple tank.

At the end of the episode the Lord revealed himself and, says the Purana, restored Nayanar and his wife to youth. This part of the tale shows the Nayanar's firmness and the purity of his married life.

What we need here is his way of life. He worked with his own hands, ate by his own craft, did not stretch his hand to others, and was in a position to give to devotees. The spirit of the verse 'uzhudhundu vaazhvaare vaazhvaar' is clear in it. Though he did not plough, the self-respect of eating by his own craft is the same in kind.

To reflect on

Is the food you eat the fruit of your own labour, and does a part of it reach others?
