Explanation

This verse is direct practical advice on the craft of farming. If the field is ploughed deep and left to dry well in the sun, the soil becomes loose dust. Air and light enter it, microbes multiply, and the soil enriches itself. Then, the verse says, the need for added manure falls away.

Commentators differ on 'thodippuzhudhi kaksaa unakkin'. 'Thodi' is a measure of weight, a palam, and 'kaksu' is a quarter. Some take it that a palam of wet soil should be dried until it reduces to a quarter palam. Others explain that one should plough a thodi deep and turn it to dust. In either reading the idea of ploughing deep and conditioning the soil well does not change.

A great lesson in this advice is the power of preparation. Preparing the ground properly gives better yield than doing many things after the crop has grown. So it is in our lives: hard work put in at the beginning of an undertaking saves later extra effort. The Tamil saying 'Aadip pattam thedi vidhai', seek the Aadi season to sow, reflects the same wisdom. To one who starts in the right season with the right preparation, nature gives plentifully. Modern science accepts the benefit of deep ploughing and soil conditioning. It is striking that Valluvar said so long ago.

A story

The Aadi Season

In a village in the Thanjavur district lived an old farmer, Muthusamy. His grandson Selvam had finished his studies and returned to the village, bringing new methods of farming. The month of Aadi began. The village was nearing its Aadi Perukku festival.

"Thatha, if we put plenty of fertiliser by modern methods, the yield will rise," said Selvam. Muthusamy smiled. "There is nothing wrong in using fertiliser, kanna. But have you prepared the land properly first?" Selvam, in a hurry, ploughed once and got ready to sow at once.

Muthusamy stopped him. "They say seek the Aadi season to sow. But before sowing, plough the field deep and let it dry in the sun for some days." Doubtfully, Selvam did so. He ploughed twice, deep, and left the field to cool in the sun.

After a few days the land turned to loose dust. When he took a handful, it crumbled in his hand into fine powder. "Now we can sow," said Muthusamy. They applied only a little manure.

That year the yield rose above previous years. Even neighbouring fields that had been given heavy fertiliser did not give such a harvest. Selvam was amazed. "Thatha, how is this?"

Muthusamy answered: "Preparing the soil before sowing is the real manure. It is what Valluvar says: dry the soil well and plough, and you need not even a handful of manure." From that day Selvam began to combine traditional and new knowledge.

On Aadi Perukku, when they worshipped at the Kaveri bank, grandfather and grandson bowed together to the fresh water. That year their field stood as a lesson to the whole village.
