Explanation

This verse points out the most common error in assigning work: giving it on the basis of fondness. 'Sirandhaan' here means the one most dear to me. Work should not be given merely because someone is dear; it should be given to the one who has the ability to know and perform it.

'Arindhu' is knowing the nature and method of the work. 'Aatri' is accomplishing it with patience and perseverance. One who has both is fit. One with knowledge but no effort will not complete the task; one with effort but no knowledge will complete it wrongly.

Why is giving work out of fondness harmful? First, the unfit will spoil the work. Second, the spirit of other capable persons who are passed over will sink. Third, the idea spreads that the leader's decisions are partial, and the institution's trust breaks.

So Valluvar teaches the leader something difficult: sometimes those he loves must be passed over. Love is one thing, entitlement to work another. Affection may be given to the near; work must be given to the fit.

The seventh verse of the previous chapter already spoke of the harm of trusting the unwise out of affection. Here the same idea returns from the viewpoint of employment. It is the most important principle of assignment.

Even today, giving priority to relatives and friends in family firms, government offices and associations is a great problem. This verse gives a simple answer: look at fitness.

A story

Dhrishtadyumna Chosen as Commander

From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva): When the Kurukshetra war became certain, the Pandavas gathered their seven akshauhini divisions. The question arose of who should lead the Pandava army. Yudhishthira asked his brothers for counsel. Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva each gave an opinion.

Sahadeva recommended Virata, king of Matsya. Virata had given the Pandavas refuge and was senior in age. Nakula recommended Drupada, Draupadi's father and the Pandavas' father-in-law. Because of love and gratitude towards these two, it might have seemed fitting to give them the post.

But Arjuna recommended Drupada's son Dhrishtadyumna. Dhrishtadyumna had been born from the sacrificial fire to kill Drona and was expert in the art of war. Bhima said likewise. In the end Krishna also supported him. Yudhishthira, looking not at affection or kinship but at war skill, appointed Dhrishtadyumna chief commander.

Had Virata or Drupada, senior in age and rank, been made leaders, respect would have been satisfied, but it would not have fulfilled the need for skill that comes at the war's end. Yudhishthira was clear that responsibility goes to the capable, though he be younger.

Dhrishtadyumna led the Pandava army through the eighteen-day war. This choice, which put merit above affection, helped the Pandavas on the road to victory.

This verse and this story say that the leader need not lessen his affection; he must simply not mix it into the choice for the task.

To reflect on

Is there a role in your care that you have kept for someone because you like them, not because they are the best fit?
