Explanation

In this verse 'vinaiyudaiyaan' is one skilled at his work. When he behaves with friendliness and closeness to the leader, and the leader misreads it and, thinking 'Why does he come so close? Does he covet my place?', turns suspicious and pushes him away, fortune leaves the leader, says Valluvar.

The phrase 'veraaga ninaippaanai' is important. To think otherwise of a friend shows envy and suspicion. Seeing a capable man grow, the leader fears for his own position. That is a sign of insecurity.

Such a leader will not keep the capable near, but drive them off. The one who leaves may join the enemy, or may lose spirit in his work out of resentment. Then only the incapable remain in the leader's rule. Wealth and growth depart from him.

'Thiru' is the goddess of wealth. It is our tradition's belief that Thiru does not stay where the capable are not honoured. So a leader should, with self-confidence, keep the capable near and accept their friendship.

This is the basis of leadership: to embrace without fear even those more capable than oneself. That is what grows an institution.

In today's organisations we see many leaders sidelining their best staff as rivals. Valluvar warned of its result two thousand years ago.

A story

Vali Who Drove Out Sugriva

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda): Vali, king of Kishkindha, was extremely strong. His younger brother Sugriva was a true support to him, helping in the governance. Even when Vali went out to fight, the duty of guarding the country was Sugriva's. He was skilled in work and also a friend to his elder brother.

Once an asura named Mayavi challenged Vali to fight in the night. When Vali chased him, the asura entered a cave. Vali told Sugriva, "I shall go inside and kill him; you keep guard at the mouth of the cave," and went in. A year passed and Vali did not return.

A river of blood flowed out of the cave. The asura's cries were heard. Sugriva thought Vali was dead. To keep the asura from coming out, he closed the cave mouth with a huge boulder. Later, urged by the ministers, he took the kingship himself.

When Vali defeated the asura and came out, he found the cave closed. He thought his brother had plotted and shut him in. However much Sugriva explained, he did not believe him out of suspicion. He drove his brother out of the country and kept his wife for himself.

Sugriva had served his brother in friendship; Vali took no account of it and thought wrongly. The result? He lost the support of his capable brother. Sugriva allied with Rama and became the cause of Vali's death. Vali lost his kingdom and his life.

Vali's fall is an example that one who drives away by suspicion the person who stood by him in friendship loses his fortune.
