Explanation

This couplet briefly links penance and worth. "Nonmai" is penance. True penance is not only sitting with closed eyes in a forest; it consists in the goodness of killing no creature and giving no pain. Likewise, worth consists in the goodness of not speaking of others' evil. Though both look like small acts, both are hard to keep.

Commentators say killing is not only of the body; torturing others by word and thought is included. Backbiting is a weapon that kills a person's good name. So not killing and not backbiting are two branches of one path: not harming others in any way. The sanror stands in this path in body, mind and speech.

In Hindu tradition non-violence and not speaking ill of others are listed one after the other among the divine endowments in the sixteenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. In the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana, the scene where Rama restrains his brother Lakshmana's anger and does not speak ill of Kaikeyi beautifully shows this path.

Some commentators explain "nonmai" here as patience, others as penance. Both groups take "saalbu" as the fullness of good qualities.

In daily life, if we try to pass a whole day without backbiting anyone, we realise how hard it is. That very practice makes us sanrors. If our speech does not hurt others, our very silence becomes our penance.

A story

Rama Who Would Not Blame Kaikeyi

Rama's way shines in the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. On the night before the coronation, Kaikeyi asked Dasharatha for the two boons he had given her: Rama must go to the forest for fourteen years, and Bharata must be king. Dasharatha fell in a faint. Rama calmly agreed to go to the forest to fulfil his father's word.

On hearing the news Lakshmana seethed with anger. "Father is deluded. Are you to go to the forest by Kaikeyi's scheme? I shall fight against this arrangement and seat you on the throne," he said, taking up his bow. He bitterly blamed both Dasharatha and Kaikeyi. Rama gently held him back.

Rama said, "Lakshmana, fulfilling father's word is my duty. Kaikeyi is like a mother to me; do not speak ill of her. This is the will of fate. Hold Kaikeyi in the same respect as you hold my mother Kausalya." Stressing his love for Bharata, he added, "Let only good come to him; his becoming king gives me joy."

Even amid a great loss Rama blamed no one, spoke harshly to no one and thought no harm. Where Lakshmana was about to take up arms, Rama established peace by word. The words he did not speak showed his worth. Because he did not accuse Kaikeyi, the royal family of Ayodhya did not split. By the path of non-killing and not backbiting, Rama is honoured as the model of the sanror.

To reflect on

When you feel wronged, what do you say about the person to others, and what would change if you chose silence or kindness instead?
