Explanation

This couplet speaks of the link between strength and humility. "Aatruvaar aatral" is the strength of one capable of action. The true expression of that strength is not arrogance but humility. For one without strength to bow is helplessness; for one with strength to bow is virtue. Such humility is not weakness but the maturity of power.

In the second part Valluvar calls this very humility the weapon by which the worthy "turn" their foes. "Maatraarai maatrum" has two meanings: to change the enmity of foes, or to turn aside their attack. It is hard even for a foe to rage at a humble person. His calm blunts the enemy's weapon. Arrow and sword win only a body; humility wins the heart.

In the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, before the Kurukshetra war, Yudhishthira went to Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and Shalya in the opposing army, bowed at their feet and received their blessings. This is a fine example of this couplet.

Some commentators take it as a political subtlety, others as a quality of righteous conduct. But Valluvar's purpose is that humility is not a mere trick; it is the natural character of the sanror.

In our lives too, the one who answers a harsh word softly usually wins the argument. The strength of one who gives gentleness rather than anger in answer to anger is the true strength. Where there is humility, enmity does not last long.

A story

Yudhishthira Who Bowed Before the War

In the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata an incident on the morning of the first day of the Kurukshetra war touches the heart. The two armies stood arrayed face to face. The time for the conches to sound was near. Then Yudhishthira took off his armour, laid his weapons in the chariot and began to walk barefoot towards the Kaurava army. The Pandavas and Krishna were bewildered. Arjuna ran up and asked, "Brother, where are you going? The war is about to begin." Yudhishthira walked on without a word.

Krishna smiled and said, "He is going to seek the blessings of the elders." Yudhishthira first went before Bhishma, bowed at his feet and said, "Grandsire, I have to fight against you. You must give us permission and blessing." Bhishma, glad, said, "Son, had you not come thus I would have cursed you. You will win. But I fight bound to the Kauravas' side by duty. Afterward I shall tell you the means by which you may win."

Next he bowed to Dronacharya. Drona said, "Since you stand in dharma, victory is yours. Ask what you want." Then Kripacharya and his uncle Shalya also gave blessings. All of them said that though they stood in the Kaurava army by duty, in heart they were on the side of dharma. Then Yudhishthira returned to his army.

There he received what no weapon could win from enemies: honest blessing, the means of victory and the morale of his army. By bowing he lost none of his dignity; he gained the regard of his foes. So humility became his armour and his weapon. Valluvar's words "panidhal adhu sandror maatraarai maatrum padai" unfold here as a scene.

To reflect on

When you have the stronger position in a disagreement, how might a gesture of humility change the outcome more than a show of strength?
