Explanation

The world reckons poverty a disgrace. But Valluvar denies it. If the firm strength of character called "saalbu" is in a person, he suffers no disgrace even if he lives in poverty. Wealth depends on outward things; character depends on the heart. Poverty cannot lower one whose heart is high.

The word "thinmai" fits well here. When poverty comes, it takes strength of mind not to seek wrong ways, not to cheat by borrowing, and not to cringe before others. That strength is worth. Such a person's poverty raises him in the eyes of the village, for they know he did not fail even in poverty.

In the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata, when Krishna went to Hastinapura as envoy, he refused the feast at Duryodhana's palace and ate at the house of Vidura, who lived simply. Vidura had little wealth, but his honesty, wisdom and firmness in dharma placed him above kings.

Some commentators take the couplet as comfort for those suffering poverty, others as a warning to the rich that wealth alone does not bring eminence. In both, character is the measure of worth.

In daily life, parents who earn honestly on a small income and raise their household in the right way are an example. Their money is little but the village's regard is full. Poverty is temporary; worth is lasting. So it is wise to seek character first.

A story

Krishna at Vidura's House

The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata tells of Krishna coming to Hastinapura as the envoy of the Pandavas. He came to ask that, to prevent war, the Pandavas be given at least five villages. The citizens welcomed him. Dhritarashtra and Duryodhana prepared a feast in their palace and invited him. Many dishes, a wealth of display and offerings were there.

Krishna refused the feast. He told Duryodhana plainly, "Food may be eaten if offered in love, or if one is starving. There is no love in your heart, and I have not come in hunger. So I will not accept your feast," and went to the house of Vidura. Though Vidura was a minister of great standing in the royal court, his house was a simple one without the pride of wealth.

Vidura and his wife were drowned in joy at seeing Krishna. Vidura offered him the tenderness of his heart. He served simple food with love. As traditional tales tell, Vidura's wife, forgetting herself in love, gave him the skin of the plantain and Krishna ate it too with sweetness. So Krishna accepted love as his food.

Krishna told Vidura, "Your wealth is little, but your honesty, wisdom and firmness in dharma drew me. Your love is greater than the feast kings offer." Though Vidura was poor, he was not disgraced; he gained a regard before which even kings bow. In poverty he did not fall short in worth. This is the evidence for "poverty is no disgrace to a man if he has the firmness called worth".
