The Knowledge of Indications · Kuripparidhal

This chapter praises the subtle skill of understanding what is in another's mind from the face and eyes before a word is spoken. Valluvar calls such a person an ornament of the world and almost godlike, and shows how the eyes and face reveal love, anger and enmity.

Introduction

Among the closing chapters of the Amaichiyal in the Porutpaal stands Kurippu Arithal, the knowledge of indications. 'Kurippu' means a sign that speaks without words, the hidden message that shows in a person's face, eyes, gait and bearing. 'Arithal' is to grasp it. A minister living beside a king needs this skill above all, for rulers do not always state openly what is in their minds. One who senses their thought before they speak, and acts on it, is a rare treasure to the state.

The first two verses honour a person with this skill. One who knows the heart without being told is an ornament of the world, says Valluvar, and one who divines without doubt what is inside is equal to a god. The third and fourth verses say that such persons should be taken into one's counsel at any cost, and that though they look like others in form, they are in truth a class apart. The fifth verse raises a sharp question: what use is an eye that cannot read the heart?

The sixth and seventh verses speak of the nature of the face. As a crystal shows the colour of what lies near it, the face first shows what is in the heart; whether joy or anger comes, the face runs ahead. The eighth, ninth and tenth verses explain the power of the eye. If there is someone who can read, a mere look is enough; the eyes alone declare enmity or friendship; and the measuring rod of the subtle is nothing but the eye.

In life today this skill is needed in every relationship. A physician must sense the patient's fear from the face; a teacher must read confusion in a student's eyes; parents must see the hidden sorrow in a child's tired face. In an age of talking through phones this skill is declining, so Valluvar's chapter also serves as a reminder. Affection that attends to the hearts of others is the foundation of reading signs.

Another distinction of this chapter is the honour it gives to the eye and the face. In our tradition the eyes are called windows of the soul. When we behold the image of God we seek his eyes first and pray for his gracious glance. In the arts the same holds: netra abhinaya in dance, expression in music, the glance in drama are all languages of feeling.

Chapter story

Kuchela and Krishna

From the Bhagavata Purana. Krishna and Sudama, also called Kuchela, had studied together in the gurukula of the sage Sandipani. Time passed. Krishna rose to be king of Dwaraka, while Kuchela lived in poverty. His family went hungry for days. His wife begged, 'Your school friend is said to be king in Dwaraka. Go to him and ask for help.'

Kuchela hesitated. He felt shy to ask for help on the strength of friendship. Yet considering the condition of his family, he set out. His wife, thinking he should not go empty-handed, begged from the neighbours a little flattened rice, tied it in a torn cloth and gave it to him. Holding that small bundle he went to Dwaraka.

At the palace gate the guards at first stopped him, seeing his torn clothes and thin body. But when they said, 'A brahmin named Sudama has come,' Krishna ran out, the Bhagavata says. He embraced him, seated him on his own throne and washed his feet himself. The people of the palace were amazed. The queen Rukmini fanned him.

Kuchela was too ashamed to speak. He could not even find a voice to say why he had come. He tried to hide the bundle of flattened rice in his hand. Krishna looked at him with a smile and said, 'My friend, what have you brought for me?' In the moment when Kuchela hesitated, Krishna himself took the hidden bundle, said, 'There is nothing I like more than this,' and ate a handful.

When he reached for a second handful, tradition says, Rukmini caught his hand. The sense is that a single handful had already given wealth enough to end Kuchela's poverty. Kuchela spent that night in the palace and spoke with Krishna of the happy memories of the gurukula. But he said not one word about his poverty.

Next day he took leave and walked homeward, all along grieving that he had asked for nothing. But when he reached his village, where his hut had stood there was a beautiful mansion, and his wife waited at the door in golden ornaments. Without being told, Krishna had sensed his need and fulfilled it.

This story is the summit of reading signs. It was Krishna's heart that felt, in the eyes and the face, a friend's unspoken pain. And that is also the mark of true friendship. The story shows that the best friend is one who gives before being asked.

Krishna's act shows not only the depth of his friendship but the summit of his skill in reading signs. Kuchela asked nothing with his mouth, but his torn cloth, thin body and shy eyes told the whole story. Krishna read it.
