Familiarity · Pazhaimai

Familiarity, says this chapter, is the old friendship that does not cut down a friend's right of free intimacy. Valluvar teaches that those who bear with a friend's liberties, who keep the bond over distance and even over lapses, are honoured by the world.

Introduction

In the chapter on examining friends we learnt how to choose them. Now, in the chapter 'Familiarity', Valluvar tells us how a chosen friendship should be when it has ripened with time. 'Pazhaimai' means the quality of being long accustomed. Between long-standing friends there grows a special liberty, an ease, a lack of awkwardness. Valluvar calls it 'kezhuthakaimai'. To honour that liberty is the theme of this chapter.

The first verse defines it: familiarity is the friendship that does not cut down the friend's right. The second and third verses call that liberty the limb of friendship and say that it is the duty of the noble to be as salt to it; an old friendship without such liberty is like food without salt. The fourth and fifth verses teach that if a friend acts without being asked, we should accept it lovingly, and if he does something that pains us, we should regard it as either ignorance or great intimacy.

The sixth and seventh verses speak of friendship standing firm over distance and over lapses. Those who stay within the bounds do not give up the link with an old friend even when far away, and those who come in the lineage of love do not sever love even if the friend does something ruinous. The eighth praises the familiarity that does not listen to others' charges against a friend. The last two verses close by saying that the world esteems those who continue an old friendship unbroken from generation to generation, and that even those who care for nobody are drawn to them.

The word 'pazhaimai' itself deserves a pause. It means not only being old but being matured by long use. As rice gains flavour with age and an old tree gives deep shade, an old friendship gains richness over time. In a new friendship there is always a small gap of courtesy; in an old one it melts, and that melting is what Valluvar praises as 'kezhuthakaimai'.

Valluvar sees familiarity in two aspects: accepting the liberty the friend gives us, and giving the friend the liberty he deserves. On this two-way road an old friendship comes alive. Friendship that stands only on respect without liberty is mere habit; friendship in which respect mingles with liberty is true familiarity.

In our time new contacts form quickly and vanish quickly. We easily forget school friends and companions of youth. This chapter stops us and asks us to ponder the worth of friendship ripened by time.

Chapter story

The Lord's Friend

The life of Sundaramurthi Nayanar in the Periya Puranam holds a special distinction. He addressed the Lord freely as his friend, and the Lord accepted him as His friend, giving him the name 'Thambiran Tholan', 'friend of the Lord', as tradition honours. In worship Sundarar put affection before awe. He asked for his needs with a sense of right, and when anger came he scolded with the same sense of right.

Once Sundarar stayed at Thiruvarur. There he saw a beautiful woman, Paravai, fell in love, and by the Lord's grace married her. Their household life went happily. Later, when he went to Thiruvotriyur, he married another woman, Sangili. There, before the Lord, he vowed never to leave her, and failed to keep that vow.

When he returned to Thiruvarur, Paravai Nachiyar was angry and would not let him in. Sundarar was troubled. He appealed to the Lord, his friend: "Can you not go and soothe Paravai's anger on my behalf?" Tradition says that the Lord agreed and went that night to Paravai's house as a messenger.

It was not once but twice that the Lord went as messenger. At first Paravai did not open the door. When the Lord went again and entreated, her heart finally softened. Sundarar was confident that the Lord, as friend, would accept whatever he asked in intimacy, and that confidence was not in vain.

On another occasion, when Sundarar was weak with hunger on a journey, the Lord came as an old man and gave him food. Another time, when he needed gold, he asked the Lord freely, and the Lord granted it. At times he even rebuked the Lord in song, and even these hymns overflow with love.

Tradition also tells how he first came to the Lord's service: as he stood at his wedding an old man came, produced a palm-leaf deed and claimed him as a bondsman. At the court the old man was revealed as the Lord himself. Yet the service Sundarar then gave was never servile; it was friendship. And when, having broken his vow to Sangili, he lost his sight, he did not abandon the Lord but sang, 'Is this how a friend should be treated?' The Lord, say the stories, restored his sight in two stages, at Kanchipuram and Thiruvarur.

This is the glory of 'pazhaimai'. There was liberty on both sides and love on both sides. Sundarar knew his right and used it; the Lord accepted it lovingly and honoured it. We may take this to be what Valluvar means by friendship that does not cut down the right of the friend. The Lord did not diminish His devotee's right, and the devotee never forgot the Lord's greatness.
