Mahabharata, Sabha ParvaDuryodhana's Envy
From the Mahabharata, Sabha Parva. In Indraprastha, Duryodhana saw the wondrous hall built by Maya and the wealth that kings brought to the Rajasuya sacrifice. Where he thought there was floor, there was water, and he fell in. Where he thought there was water, there was floor.
Returning to Hastinapura, he would not eat or sleep and grew pale with envy. To his father Dhritarashtra he poured out envious words: "Having seen the Pandavas' wealth, I cannot go on living." With Shakuni he plotted the game of dice.
Though Vidura warned them, those envious words turned into deeds. The dice game, the humiliation and finally the Kurukshetra war destroyed the whole clan. That is how great the harvest of envious speech can be.
