Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto; Deepavali traditionNaraka's Fall and the Dawn Oil Bath
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto. Narakasura, son of Bhudevi, tormented the gods, imprisoned sixteen thousand princesses and seized the earrings of Aditi. Krishna rode on Garuda with Satyabhama, fought him and won.
Bhudevi herself came and praised Krishna, asking his grace for Naraka's son. The captive princesses were freed, and the world was released from fear.
By tradition, it is in memory of that victory that we take an oil bath before dawn on Deepavali, a bath honoured as Ganga snanam. This custom of purifying body and mind on the day evil was removed is the reminder behind the weekly oil bath.
