Mahabharata, Adi ParvaJanamejaya Hears the Bharata
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Janamejaya, son of Parikshit, performed a great serpent sacrifice to avenge his father's death. At the plea of the young sage Astika, the sacrifice was halted.
Vyasa came to that assembly. Janamejaya humbly asked, "I wish to hear the full story of my ancestors, the Pandavas and the Kauravas." Vyasa asked his disciple Vaishampayana to tell it.
As Vaishampayana narrated, Janamejaya listened patiently, asking questions here and there to clear his doubts. It is because of his eagerness to listen that the Mahabharata was told in full to the world. The effort of listening raised up one man, and then the whole world.
