Explanation

This verse gives a simple measure for which acts to do and which to avoid. An act should bring fame and bring good. Acts that give neither, that is, neither fame nor benefit, should be always avoided. In 'endrum oruvudhal ventum' the word 'endrum' stresses 'in any circumstance, at any time'.

For 'pugazhodu nandri' commentators give two explanations. Some say acts that give neither fame nor benefit. Others say acts that do not give good along with fame, that is, benefit that comes with good name. The second view is subtle: even if there is benefit, if it comes with blame it is not good.

This is a kind of practical wisdom. Many acts we do drain time and effort, yet give neither fame nor benefit. Useless gossip, idle quarrels and meaningless contests are all of this kind. Avoiding them is a way of saving our energy.

On the other side, the verse also gives a sign of pure action. An act that brings fame is one respected by others. An act that brings good is useful. The act in which both join is pure.

Before entering an act we too can ask two questions: Will this bring good to me or others? Will it bring a good name? If both answers are no, it is better to leave it. This simple habit reduces the meaningless parts of our life.

A story

The Word 'Ashwatthama Has Fallen'

The Drona Parva of the Mahabharata describes an event on the fifteenth day of the war. The Kaurava army led by Dronacharya was inflicting great trouble on the Pandavas. Krishna realised that Drona could not be defeated unless he laid down arms; if he heard news of his son's death he would renounce weapons, Krishna said. Bhima killed an elephant named Ashwatthama and shouted, 'Ashwatthama is dead.'

Drona trembled on hearing it. But he believed his son would not die. He asked Yudhishthira, the one man who would speak the truth: 'Is Ashwatthama dead?' Yudhishthira had never spoken a lie in his life. Krishna pressed him: 'Say this for victory. Say softly that it is an elephant.'

At last Yudhishthira said loudly, 'Ashwatthama is dead,' and the word 'elephant' softly, the Mahabharata says. Drona did not hear the last word. Believing his son dead, he laid down his weapons. Then Dhrishtadyumna attacked and felled him.

This one event is regarded as a great stain on Yudhishthira's life. Tradition says that till then his chariot moved four finger-breadths above the ground and by this lie it touched the earth. Even though victory came, this act did not bring fame to the Pandavas; only blame of having deceived and killed a teacher. Arjuna was grieved to see it.

The text also says that later, when Yudhishthira went to heaven, he had to see hell for a moment on account of this lie. Even Yudhishthira, who did this act of blame, giving neither good nor fame, for Krishna's strategy, was not freed of its stain. The warning of 'endrum oruvudhal ventum pugazhodu nandri payavaa vinai' is clear.
