Explanation

The first verse of the chapter compares two excellences. One is 'thunainalam': the support of good friends, ministers and helpers. The other is 'vinainalam': the purity of one's own action. Valluvar grants that the goodness of allies brings wealth and growth, but he raises purity of action higher, saying it brings all that one desires.

Why is the goodness of action higher? Because allies are not wholly in our control, but action is in our hand. A friend may change, a helper may leave; but the fruit of the pure action we did stays with us. Moreover good allies come seeking the one who acts purely. So the goodness of action draws the goodness of allies to itself.

Commentators widen 'thunai' to friends, ministers, army and wealth. For 'ventiya ellaam' they give wealth, fame, dharma and inner peace, all of them. So seen, pure action gives good to body and mind together.

There is a subtlety: purity is needed not only in the result but at each step. Ally-strength obtained by wrong means will one day collapse. If the way of action is pure, allies come of themselves and those who come stay.

In today's life, for a business or family to grow, seeking supporters is not enough; every action we do must be done honestly. That gives lasting good: such is the verse's message. Beginning the day with this confidence also gives peace of mind.

A story

The Sacrifice of King Shibi

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells the story of Shibi. Shibi, king of the Ushinara country, was famous as a king who upheld dharma. Indra and Agni decided to test his righteousness. Agni became a dove; Indra became a hawk and chased it. The frightened dove took refuge in Shibi's lap.

The hawk came to the king and said, 'King, that dove is my food. Hand it over to me. I am hungry.' Shibi said, 'To protect a life that has taken refuge is my duty. I will not hand it over. I will give you other food.' The hawk said, 'I eat only fresh flesh. In place of the dove give me flesh of equal weight from your body.'

Shibi gladly agreed. He had a balance brought and placed the dove in one pan. In the other pan he placed flesh cut from his thigh. The dove still weighed more. Again and again he cut flesh from his body and set it down. At last he mounted his whole body on the pan.

At that moment Indra and Agni appeared in their own forms. 'You are firm in dharma; your action is pure. We grant you any boon you wish,' they said. Shibi's body was restored, more radiant than before. The Mahabharata says his fame spread across the whole world. This tale is also honoured in Tamil texts; Shibi's glory is spoken of in many places including the Silappathikaram.

Shibi had great armies and ministers as allies. But his fame did not come from them; it came from the purity of his action. His honesty in daring to give his life for a refugee bird that no one was watching raised him. Shibi stands as the proof of 'vinainalam ventiya ellaam tharum'.

To reflect on

Do I value honesty in my actions above the support of allies?
