Explanation

The previous verse asked us to avoid acts that give neither fame nor good. This verse goes a step further: those who wish to rise should avoid acts that dim their lustre, that is, fame, esteem and good name. 'Aaadhum ennumavar' are those with the wish 'we shall rise'. The counsel is meant for them.

One who wishes to rise usually thinks only of new achievements. But Valluvar here shows the negative path too: one can rise by leaving certain acts. Though achievements accumulate, one blameworthy act can dim them, as a crack mars the beauty of a tall building.

The phrase 'oli maazhkum' means fading of lustre. Fame is a lamp; if soot settles on its glass the light falls. In the first chapter we saw the family lamp; likewise here good name is shown as a lamp. To keep it unsoiled is our responsibility.

Commentators take it both as royal conduct and individual conduct. If a leader loses esteem by one wrong act, all who trusted him suffer. An individual too may lose the good name of years by a small fault.

In today's world a news item or a post spreads in a moment and ruins reputation. So the verse's warning becomes more necessary. Each who wishes to rise can pause a moment before acting and think, will this act dim my light? That moment prevents many errors.

A story

Arjuna Who Refused Urvashi

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata describes Arjuna's time in Indra's world. After obtaining the Pashupata weapon, Arjuna went to heaven at the call of his father Indra and stayed five years, training in weapons and learning dance and music from Chitrasena. Indra honoured him greatly. One day, to please him, Indra sent the celestial woman Urvashi to him.

Urvashi, beautifully adorned, came to Arjuna's chamber at night and expressed her wish. Arjuna was shocked. Closing his eyes he said, 'Mother! You are the ancestress of our Pururavas line. I see you as my mother. Like Kunti, Madri and Shachi Devi, you are a mother to me.'

Urvashi grew angry. 'Celestial women show such desire freely in Indra's world. As you refused my wish, you shall live a year as a eunuch,' she cursed, the text says. Arjuna accepted it calmly. Indra, learning of it, praised him and modified the curse to apply for just one year of his choosing, to be used during the incognito period.

Later, in the thirteenth year of incognito life, Arjuna lived hidden in the palace of Virata as a dance teacher named Brihannala. The curse became a boon for him. Afterwards when he revealed his identity his esteem rose still higher.

Here Arjuna avoided an act that would have dimmed the lustre of his fame. Refusing heavenly pleasure, he guarded conduct. With the wish to rise, he avoided the act that would block rising. That firmness raised him further. It is a beautiful example of 'oodhal ventum olimaazhkum seyvinai aaadhum ennumavar'.
