Explanation

This verse speaks together of man's natural errors and the way to recover from them. First the preventive lesson: 'etrendru irangguva seyyarka', do not do acts that later make you lament, 'alas, what have I done!' The idea is that before doing it, one must think of its consequence.

The second lesson is corrective: 'seyvaanel matranna seyyaamai nandru'. If a fault has happened, rather than lamenting endlessly, one must not do it again. Valluvar knows human weakness; so he does not severely condemn a single lapse. But he does not accept doing the same again.

Here lament is not only the sorrow of guilt; it is an alarm bell. The word 'irangguva' points to what will make us grieve. Before doing some acts our mind knows that they will bring regret. We must heed that intuition.

Some commentators take 'matranna seyyaamai nandru' as 'it is good' in general; others take 'nandru' as good, that is, dharma. In both, not repeating is the key. Reform is the sign of real repentance.

In our life the word said in anger, the decision taken in haste and the unnecessary expense bring regret later. If we learn from those experiences we can avoid them next time. That is the way of growth.

A story

Shravana and Dasharatha

The Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana shows Dasharatha, in grief at separation from Rama, remembering an old event of his life. In youth Dasharatha was skilled at hunting and knew the shabdavedhi art of striking a target by sound alone. One rainy night he went hunting on the bank of the Sarayu. In the dark he heard a sound near the water; he thought it was an elephant drinking.

At once he shot a shabdavedhi arrow. A human cry came: 'Alas! Mother!' Dasharatha was startled and ran. There a young sage lay fallen, struck by the arrow. His name was Shravana. He had gone to fetch water for his aged blind parents. 'Who are you? What harm did I do you?' he asked.

Dasharatha was stunned. His heart grieved, 'What have I done!' The sin of killing a young brahmin with his own hand tormented the king. Shravana asked him to carry the water to his parents and gave up his life. Dasharatha went to his parents with the water. In a trembling voice he told what had happened.

The old father in anger and grief cursed Dasharatha: 'As I die separated from my son, you too will die in the grief of separation from your son.' The parents entered the fire of their son's pyre and died. Dasharatha bore that curse in his heart.

Many years later when Rama went to the forest, that memory rose in him. 'This is the fruit of what I did,' he said weeping to Kausalya. The act done in haste, trusting a sound, tormented him all his life. This is a deep scene of 'etrendru irangguva seyyarka'. An act done without thought troubles one even in old age.

To reflect on

What would I do today that I will regret tomorrow, saying 'what have I done'?
