Explanation

This verse says the true test of conduct comes in hardship. When prosperous, it is easy to be honest; when poverty and crisis come, base acts tempt. 'Idukkan padinum' means even if such hardship is met. Even then 'ilivandha seyyaar': they will not do base acts that lower honour.

Who they are, the phrase 'nadukkatra kaatchiyavar' tells. 'Nadukkam' is fear, wavering. 'Nadukkatra' is without wavering. 'Kaatchi' is clear vision, knowledge. That is, those who know clearly what lasts and what does not. They know that hardship is temporary and the stain of a base act is permanent.

Commentators give 'kaatchi' the sense of knowledge that sees the real truth. It is the knowledge that distinguishes that hardship is the work of fate while pure action is one's own duty. So they will not give up honour even to stay alive.

This is a hard path, but Valluvar insists on it, because once a base act is accepted it becomes a habit. The habit does not go even after hardship goes. Refusing at the beginning protects one's nature.

In today's life, in crises like job loss, debt and illness, shortcuts call. One who refuses them and chooses the honest hard way is truly strong. After the hardship is crossed he will stand with head high. That uprightness is the reward he has gained.

A story

The Weaver Who Did Not Mix the Thread Even in Famine

In a silk-weaving family of Kanchipuram lived a man named Gopalan. As the thread of the saris he wove was pure silk, his shop had a good name. Customers would say, 'A Gopalan sari has not even one thread of mixture.' He taught the same honesty to his son Kumaran.

One year a severe famine and drought came. There was no one to buy silk saris. There was no money to pay wages. The looms stopped. The owner of the neighbouring shop, Shanmugam, came to him with a suggestion: 'Gopala, weave with cheap synthetic thread mixed into the silk. It will not show outside. The price will drop; sales will rise. There is no other way to cross this famine.'

Gopalan and his family had suffered hunger for many days. Kumaran said to his father, 'Father, we could do it just once. We will die of hunger.' Gopalan was silent for a while. Then he said, 'Son, we can bear hunger today. But lost good name never returns. On the loom we weave silk; we do not weave lies.' He refused Shanmugam's suggestion.

He pawned the household vessels, paid a little wage and kept the loom going. Though he wove less, he wove only in pure silk. The famine ended. Rain fell; the town flourished. The temple festival came. By then the shops of those who sold mixed-thread saris were empty with ruined names.

Those wanting silk saris thronged to Gopalan's shop. His name spread as 'the one who stayed pure even in famine'. His shop grew large. Kumaran honoured his father's firmness. He taught his own son the same words: 'Weave silk on the loom; do not weave lies.'

Gopalan, with steady clear vision, avoided the base act even in hardship. He is the living form of 'idukkan padinum ilivandha seyyaar nadukkatra kaatchiyavar'.
