Explanation

'Kadindha' are the acts the great have forbidden, that is, contrary to the path. 'Kadindhorar seydhaarkku' is for those who did them without avoiding. Even if their plan succeeds, Valluvar says, those acts bring trouble. 'Mudindhaalum peezhai tharum' means they bring pain even after success. This is against our everyday thinking: we think that if success comes there is no trouble.

Why so? A success gained by a wrong way gnaws at one's conscience. That guilt spoils peace. Also the fear of the wrong way coming out, and its consequences, follow. One who wins by a wrong way may celebrate outside; inside he loses peace.

Commentators give 'peezhai' the senses of trouble, grief and ruin. Some say it also refers to suffering in a later birth. In today's view, loss of mind's peace, loss of social esteem and legal trouble are the peezhai.

The verse shows that the path is not restriction but protection. The great know through experience which acts bring trouble later. If we avoid what they avoided, that trouble does not come to us.

In today's life too, winning an exam by shortcut, getting a job by cheating, doing business by lying may give temporary success. But the fear that stays in the heart does not let that success be sweet. This warning of Valluvar suits every age.

A story

The Plot of the House of Lac

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata tells of Duryodhana's plot of the house of lac. When Yudhishthira was crowned crown prince, Duryodhana's jealousy swelled. Together with Shakuni, Karna and Dushasana he planned to destroy the Pandavas. Obtaining Dhritarashtra's permission, he had a beautiful palace built at a town called Varanavata. Its builder was Purochana. The walls of that palace were made of easily inflammable materials like lac, ghee and oil.

The Pandavas were sent to stay there with their mother Kunti. Vidura learnt of the plot. He secretly warned Yudhishthira in a foreign tongue. He also sent a worker to dig a tunnel. The Pandavas lived without showing suspicion and one night set fire to the palace themselves and escaped through the tunnel. Purochana was burnt in that very palace. A family of hunters who were staying there also died.

Duryodhana rejoiced thinking his plan had succeeded. It was proclaimed all over town that the Pandavas were dead. But that success did not stand long. When it was known that the Pandavas were alive, hatred for him grew among the people. At Draupadi's swayamvara the Pandavas appeared and gained kinship with Drupada. Duryodhana's plot brought him blame and enmity.

By the plot of the house of lac sympathy for the Pandavas increased. The elders of the Kuru line condemned Duryodhana's act. Bhishma, Drona and Vidura also hated it. His mind lost peace through desire for the kingdom he wished to gain. When the Pandavas reached Indraprastha, his jealousy and fear grew still more.

Though the plot seemed to give him immediate success, in the end it paved the way to his own ruin. It is a clear example of 'kadindha kadindhorar seydhaarkku avaidhaam mudindhaalum peezhai tharum'.

To reflect on

Do I think how a success gained by a shortcut would disturb my peace of mind?
