Explanation

This is the harshest verse of the chapter on purity of action. The most honoured relation a man has in the world is his birth mother. To end her hunger is the son's first duty. But Valluvar says that even to end that hunger, one must not do an act the noble condemn. That is, rather than feed the mother by a wrong way, one must try by an honest way.

This is not a command of a stony heart. Valluvar does not ignore the mother's hunger; he says the remedy must not lie in a wrong way. Because the mother who eats food obtained by a wrong way will not truly rejoice either. For a son to incur blame brings pain to any mother.

The phrase 'saandror pazhikkum vinai' gives a measure. Our mind may justify an act; but if those excellent in knowledge and conduct condemn it, it is evil. The vision of the noble is the mirror of our conduct.

Commentators take it as hyperbole: a superlative example to stress that a wrong way is not allowed even in the hardest situation. If even the mother's hunger is not a cause for a blameworthy act, nothing else is.

In today's world many wrongs are justified saying 'I do it for my family.' This verse breaks that justification. True love is to support the loved ones by honest labour without doing wrong even for them. If the food we get is honestly earned, it brings good to body and mind.

A story

Murugan Who Worked for His Mother

In a small village near Madurai a young man named Murugan lived with his mother Valliammai. His father had died when he was small. Valliammai raised the child by grinding flour in other people's houses. Murugan worshipped daily at the village temple of Subramanya. He worked for wages under a trader of that village.

One year the rain failed. There was no work in the village. Murugan's job also stopped. There was no rice at home. For two days mother and son went hungry. The mother gave her share also to her son and slept after drinking water. Murugan saw it and his heart melted.

At that time the Thaipusam festival was near. A great quantity of offerings, rice, fruits and coconuts was heaped in the temple. A temple servant whispered to Murugan: 'Brother, there is plenty of rice in that room at night. No one will check accounts. Take a little and end your mother's hunger.' Murugan was shaken. His mind wavered.

He went into the temple and stood before Lord Murugan. 'Lord, my mother's hunger must end. But by stealing what belongs to you? I will not do that. I will support my mother by my labour,' he prayed. Returning home he told his mother, 'Mother, tomorrow morning I go to work breaking stones on the river bank.'

The next day he broke stones in the harsh sun. With the rice received as wages he cooked gruel and fed his mother. Valliammai saw the blisters on her son's hands and wept. She felt proud that her son had not taken a wrong way to end hunger.

On the festival day the temple priest learned of the matter and honoured Murugan. The villagers praised him. The temple's trustee gave him a permanent job in temple service. Honest labour ended his mother's hunger and raised his name. It is a life-illustration of 'eendraal pasikaanbaan aayinum seyyarka saandror pazhikkum vinai'.
