Explanation

This verse is full of word-play: 'azhakkonda ellaam azhappom'. What is seized by making others weep will finally go away making its owner weep. This is natural justice. Wealth built on others' tears does not last. What was gathered by tormenting, cheating and seizing from someone will one day go of itself; and as it goes it brings sorrow to its holder.

The second part is consoling: 'izhappinum pirpayakkum narpaalavai'. What was gathered by good ways, even if lost midway, yields later. That is, what was honestly gathered, even if it goes once, will come back; or it will give benefit in another form through its good name and contentment. This line gives hope to an honest person.

Commentators take 'azhappom' some as the holder too having to go weeping, some as the wealth vanishing as if weeping itself. 'Pirpayakkum' they give as yielding later, or yielding in another birth. In any sense, the justice is one.

We can apply it not only to wealth but to position, fame and relationships. A post gained by exploiting others' labour, a reputation bought by lies, do not last.

In our daily decisions we can use this measure: who weeps because of this? If there is weeping, that gain will not last. A gathering by good ways, without tears, is lasting.

A story

Ravana and Lanka

The tradition holds that the great wealth Ravana gained was built on the weeping of many. The Uttara Kanda says Lanka was first the city of Kubera. Kubera was the step-brother of Ravana. The text shows that Ravana, by his power and threat, seized Lanka and the Pushpaka aerial car from Kubera. Kubera went towards the Himalaya and founded Alakapuri.

Ravana did not stop there. He conquered gods and yakshas and seized their wealth. He troubled sages when they performed sacrifices. Trying to touch the ascetic maiden Vedavati, he received her curse. When he forced Rambha he received the curse of Nalakubara: that if he touched a woman against her will his head would burst. Thus by making many weep he gathered wealth and power.

Then he deceitfully abducted Sita. The tears of the weeping Sita became the seed of his ruin. His wife Mandodari warned him. His brother Vibhishana warned him. But Ravana did not listen. His empire, built by making others weep, collapsed under Rama's arrows.

In the war his sons, his brother Kumbhakarna and the armies all died. The women of Lanka wept. Mandodari lamented, weeping over Ravana's body. The number weeping in Lanka grew greater than the number he had made weep. 'Azhakkonda ellaam azhappom' was fulfilled there.

Lanka at last passed into Vibhishana's hands. The wealth Ravana gathered departed, making not only him but his whole clan weep. Meanwhile Rama, in his fourteen years of loss, did not leave the good path; as its fruit he later gained Ayodhya and fame.

To reflect on

How can I check today whether anyone is weeping because of my gain?
