Explanation

The closing verse of the chapter ends with a beautiful simile. 'Salam' is guile, falsehood, deceit. So 'porul seydhal' is gathering wealth by guile. 'Aarththal' is wishing to keep it guarded. 'Pasumann kalam' is a pot of unbaked raw clay. If water is poured into it, the pot dissolves at once and the water runs out. Likewise wealth gathered by guile does not last even if one tries to guard it.

The subtlety of the simile deserves notice. The water is real; the pot too is real. But because the pot is unbaked it cannot hold. Likewise wealth gathered by guile may appear real wealth, but its basis is unstable. Because the base is weak, not only the wealth but the pot too dissolves and perishes. That is, along with the wealth his good name dissolves.

Commentators point 'salaththaal porul seydhal' to guile, falsehood, theft, bribery, false accounts and many more. 'Cheating' is the word embracing all. The opposite path: wealth like a pot baked by labour. It holds water.

Like the other verses this too is not mere moral instruction but a practical truth. A life built on lies must be held up continually by lies. To guard one lie another lie is needed. That burden tires a man and in the end breaks him.

In today's life trust is the capital in business and living. By guile that capital is lost. Wealth built by labour and honesty stands holding water like a baked pot. With this clarity, doing every act purely is the way to wealth with peace of mind.

A story

The Merchant Who Cut the Weights

In the market street of Kumbakonam lived a grain merchant named Dhanapalan. He sold rice, pulses and gram. At the beginning he traded honestly. But as competition grew, greed for more profit pulled him to the wrong way. He placed false weights on the scale. Saying one hundred measures, he gave only ninety. He mixed stones and sand with the rice.

Within a few years Dhanapalan's wealth grew. He built a large mansion, bought carts and ornaments. The townsfolk celebrated him as a rich man. But in his heart there was always fear, the worry that someone might check the scale. His wife asked him, 'Whose tears did our wealth rise from?' Dhanapalan did not answer.

One day in the month of Aadi a great flood came in the Kaveri. His grain store was on the river bank. The flood entered and all the grain was soaked and rotted. That same year a customer complained about his false scale. The officials inspected and found the false weights. The townspeople boycotted his shop.

Creditors carried away his mansion, carts and ornaments. The one once celebrated now heard everyone's abuse. His wealth had melted in a single season, like water poured in a raw clay pot.

Across the same street a small trader named Muthaiya ran a small shop honestly. His weights were always correct. His wealth grew slowly and steadily. When Dhanapalan fell, he helped him. Dhanapalan said with tears, 'By guile I poured water into a pot; it dissolved.'

This tale is the witness of 'salaththaal porulseydhe maarththal pasumann kalaththulneer peydhireei yatru'. Only wealth built by honesty stands.

To reflect on

Is the foundation of my wealth firm like a baked pot, or weak like raw clay?
