Explanation

The previous verse said that the food of the ear comes before the food of the stomach. This verse shows how high those with that ear-food may be reckoned. Though they live on earth, Valluvar says, they are equal to the gods who take the offerings of sacrifice. The gods' food is the sacrificial offering; theirs is the knowledge taken in by the ear.

For 'aviyunavin aanraar' commentators say the gods who receive the offering in sacrifice. 'Aanraar' also has the sense of the noble and the wise. If taken so, the meaning may be that those with ear-food are like the gods and also equal to the noble who engage in sacrifice. In both meanings the height of one who has hearing is praised.

There is a subtlety in this comparison. If the gods do not eat the offering they feel no hunger; the sacrifice food is for them a due honour. In the same way, for the person with hearing, it is not food for the hunger of the stomach but food for the rise of the spirit. The joy of bodily food lasts a short while, and the joy of ear-food endures.

The word 'nilaththu' says this height is gained in this world itself. There is no need to wait for death to become godlike; here, through hearing, one can gain a godlike worth.

In life today those who have heard and learned good books and good talks gain respect in society. Peace and clarity show on their faces. Talking with them benefits us too. So those with ear-food guide others like gods.

A story

Janamejaya and Vaishampayana

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata, Janamejaya, son of Parikshit, began a great snake sacrifice to avenge his father, who had been killed by Takshaka. In that sacrifice all the snakes fell into the fire. It went on until a young sage named Astika came and stopped it.

During the time of that sacrifice, Vyasa came there. Janamejaya bowed to him and requested, 'You have seen with your own eyes the history of my ancestors, the Kauravas and Pandavas. Tell me why that war happened.' Vyasa asked his disciple Vaishampayana to tell the story.

Vaishampayana began to relate the Mahabharata in full. Janamejaya listened to each part with attention. Now and then he raised doubts: 'Why did Bhishma make this vow? Why did Karna stand with Duryodhana?' Vaishampayana answered each with patience. So the Bharata unfolded in questions and answers.

Even in the middle of a sacrifice to burn snakes, the king did not lessen his eagerness to hear this story. On one side was the smoke and fire of the sacrifice; on the other the sound of the tale. By the offering of the sacrifice he fed the gods; by the Bharata heard through the ear he raised himself. Learning of the victories and defeats of his ancestors, his anger cooled and his understanding cleared.

Later, at Astika's request, he stopped the sacrifice. The story he had heard had given him peace and steadiness. He gave up the anger of revenge and was ready to forgive.

By hearing, a king's heart was changed. As the gods ate the food of the sacrifice, he ate the food of the ear. Thereby his mind gained a height equal to the gods. This is the message of the verse.
