Explanation

The ear is the organ that hears sound. But this verse adds another sense to the ear: it must be pierced by hearing. 'Thotkappadaatha' means 'not pierced'. The ear is pierced to wear an ornament, and an ear that is not pierced cannot hold the ornament. In the same way, to take the ornament of hearing the ear must be pierced. Valluvar says that an ear not pierced by hearing is as one that does not hear, even when it hears.

The comparison is subtle. The piercing of the ear is not only for decoration; it is an ancient custom. The ear-piercing of a child is a rite. In the same way the opening of hearing must fall on the ear. Only then does it gain beauty and meaning. Otherwise it is a tube through which sound passes.

Some commentators render 'thotkappadaatha' as 'unpierced', and others as 'not sharpened'. In both the thought is that hearing refines the ear. An ear without hearing is like a deaf one.

In truth there is a difference between a deaf person and one with such an ear. The deaf cannot hear; this one can but does not. The second state belongs to the mind and can be changed by our effort.

In life today many talk while looking at the phone, and in meetings the mind is elsewhere. Sound falls on the ear but the meaning does not enter. Valluvar calls such an ear one that does not hear. A habit of true listening will improve our relationships and work.

A story

Ravana and Vibhishana

In the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana an important scene occurs in the court of Lanka. After Hanuman burned Lanka and left, Ravana called his ministers and consulted them: 'Rama is approaching Lanka with his army of vanaras. What should be done?' Many pleased Ravana with praise and said, 'You cannot be defeated.'

Then Ravana's younger brother Vibhishana rose. He knew dharma well. Calmly and respectfully he said, 'Brother, send Sita back to Rama. This act is against dharma. Because of it Lanka and your own life will be destroyed.' His words were full of truth, with reasons and proofs.

Ravana heard it. But his ear did not hear. Sound fell on the ear but the meaning did not enter the mind. In anger Ravana insulted Vibhishana in the very court and accused him, 'You speak for my enemy.' Some tellings add that he kicked him.

Ravana's wife Mandodari gave the same counsel. Maricha had warned him earlier. Kumbhakarna also stated his view. But Ravana's ear was not pierced by any of it. He had lost the habit of hearing what was good. As a result he lost his race, his city and his life.

Vibhishana at last left Lanka and went to Rama. Rama accepted him lovingly. The rule of Lanka came to him. The one who heard lived; the one who did not hear perished.

This story shows the harsh truth of the verse 'ketpinum kelaath thagaiyave'. Ravana, whose ear heard yet did not hear because it was not pierced by hearing, was led to a great ruin.

To reflect on

Whose counsel have you heard but not truly taken in, and what might it cost you if you keep ignoring it?
