Explanation

This verse points to a subtle fruit of hearing. Those who have gathered the knowledge of hearing after careful thought will not speak foolish words even at a time when they have understood wrongly. That is, even if one has misunderstood a matter, the words he speaks will not be foolish; they will carry humility and care.

'Pizhaiththunarnthum' means 'even when understood wrongly'. However learned a person is, he may sometimes misunderstand. But one refined by hearing will not, even in that error, speak words that lower himself. So this verse raises the character that knowledge gives above the amount of knowledge.

The phrase 'izhaiththunarnthu eendiya' is deep. 'Izhaiththal' is doing finely, as in spinning thread. So these people take what they have heard with fine thought, not superficially. Knowledge gathered so becomes their nature. They are people who think a moment before they speak.

Some commentators take 'pizhaiththunarnthum' as 'even when the thing is wrongly understood', and others as 'even after an error has occurred and been realised'. In any case the centre is that one with hearing will not speak words of ignorance.

In life today many misunderstand and attack others in arguments and conversations. One with the habit of listening corrects himself in clear words even if an error occurs midway. Humility, calm and care are the gifts of hearing.

A story

Sanjaya

In the Mahabharata, Sanjaya was Dhritarashtra's charioteer and also served as minister and counsellor. The name 'Sanjaya' means one who has won. The text shows him as a disciple of Vyasa and one skilled in hearing.

Before the Kurukshetra war began, Vyasa came to Dhritarashtra and said, 'I will give you eyes to see the war.' The blind king did not wish to see the war, but he wished to hear it. Vyasa gave Sanjaya the divine vision, a power to see far away. So Sanjaya, from the palace itself, saw all that happened on the battlefield and began to tell it to Dhritarashtra.

Sanjaya's task was not easy. Much of the news he had to tell was painful: the fall of Bhishma, the death of Abhimanyu, the defeat of Duryodhana. The mind of the blind king would ache to hear it. But Sanjaya did not hide the truth, and at the same time he did not hurt the king with harsh words. Each piece of news he told calmly, clearly and with respect.

Earlier, before the war, Sanjaya had gone as an envoy to the Pandavas and returned. In the court he told without hiding the injustice Duryodhana had done and the justice of the Pandavas. 'If you make war on the Pandavas, ruin is certain,' he warned Dhritarashtra. There was reproof in his words but no folly. Since he was refined by hearing, each word came measured.

Sanjaya also heard the Gita that Krishna told to Arjuna and told it to Dhritarashtra. He neither added to it nor took from it. Tradition honours that his memory and fine hearing gave us that talk without error.

Even when, after the war, Dhritarashtra sank in sorrow, Sanjaya stayed with him and comforted him. His excellence was his calm, which spoke no foolish word in any state. He is the example of 'those who have gathered hearing after fine thought'.

To reflect on

When you pass on something difficult you have heard, do you keep it accurate and kind, or does it grow sharper in the telling?
