Explanation

There may be little time or chance to hear good things. One may not be able to hear a long discourse or read a whole book. To such people Valluvar gives this encouragement: however little, listen to what is good. In that measure you will gain honour. The comfort of the verse is that even a small hearing is not wasted.

'Enaiththaanum' means 'however much' and 'anaiththaanum' means 'in that much'. Both are words of measure. The sense is that though the amount heard is small, its benefit comes without falling short of that amount. It gives a certainty like arithmetic; effort does not go to waste.

'Aanra perumai' is excellent honour. The honour that comes from hearing includes, more than the praise of others, the fullness a person feels in his own heart. One who has heard what is good gains the fitness to guide others, gains respect in society, and raises himself.

Some commentators explain this verse as calling for a habit of listening to something good every day, if only a little. As drops of water gather into a flood, small hearings become great knowledge in time.

In life today the complaint is that we lack time. But we can hear good talks and songs while travelling, working, or in the kitchen. The habit of ten minutes a day of hearing good things adds up to many hours in a year. It will change us slowly.

A story

Dhruva

The fourth canto of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Dhruva. King Uttanapada had two wives, Suniti and Suruchi. Suniti's son was Dhruva. One day the five-year-old Dhruva wished to sit on his father's lap. Suruchi stopped him and hurt him with words: 'Only one born from my womb deserves this place. If you wish it, pray to the Lord; in another birth you will be born from my womb.'

Dhruva went weeping to his mother. Suniti consoled him: 'My son, the Lord is the support of all. Seek him.' The boy decided to go to the forest. On the way the sage Narada met him. 'Why austerity at so young an age? Go back home,' he said, testing him. Dhruva firmly refused.

Narada was pleased at his firmness. He taught him how to perform austerity at Madhuvana on the Yamuna bank and gave him the mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya'. It was only a few words. But Dhruva listened carefully and set them in his mind. Small though the teaching was, he accepted it with full faith.

Dhruva performed severe austerity at Madhuvana. The first month he ate fruits, the second leaves, the third only water, the fourth air, and in the fifth month, the Purana says, he stopped his breath and stood on one foot. At last Vishnu appeared and gave him a boon. 'Your rule will last long; in the end you will reach a high place that none can shake,' he said. Dhruva later stayed fixed in the sky as the Pole Star.

A few words from Narada raised that boy to the top of the sky. That he listened with care to what was good, however little, became the seed of his greatness. Listen to what is good, however little; it will bring excellent honour in that measure.
