Explanation

Humble speech is a great quality. This verse says that it does not come naturally; it comes from being refined by hearing. Those who lack subtle hearing rarely speak humble words. Considering their own word to be right, they neglect others' words and speak harshly.

'Vanangiya vaayinar' means those with speech marked by bowing, that is, low and humble words. One with hearing knows how much he must learn from others. He knows there is much he does not know. So his speech takes humility naturally. One without hearing thinks his own knowledge complete and speaks loudly.

'Nunangiya kelvi' is subtle hearing. Those who hear superficially do not gain humility. Only those who hear and think deeply realise the endlessness of knowledge. The word 'aridhu', rare, subtly says not that it is wholly impossible but that it happens only rarely.

Some commentators turn it around: humble speech is natural to those with hearing. Others take it as saying that the proud are those without hearing. In both, hearing and humility are linked.

In life today some who have gained power and rank do not listen to others, and harshness grows in their speech. A leader in the habit of listening speaks in a low voice, with respect. People dare to open their hearts to him. Humility is not weakness; it is strength that comes from hearing.

A story

Duryodhana and Krishna

In the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata the Pandavas finished their twelve years of forest life and one year of hiding. They asked for the kingdom that was theirs. To prevent war Krishna came to Hastinapura as an envoy of peace.

In the royal court Krishna spoke calmly and respectfully. 'King, the Pandavas do not ask for the whole kingdom. Give only five small villages. Let us avoid war,' he said. Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and Gandhari all supported Krishna's word and gave counsel to Duryodhana.

Duryodhana answered proudly, in harsh words. 'I will not give even land the size of the point of a needle,' he declared. There was no humility in his speech. He even planned to take Krishna prisoner. The words of the elders did not enter his ear.

He always relied on his power and strength. He disregarded Bhishma's counsel, Vidura's warning and the plea of his mother Gandhari. His mouth always spoke words full of pride. Since he lacked the habit of hearing finely, humility did not come to him.

In contrast, however harshly he was insulted, Krishna spoke calmly and humbly. Though he had come as an envoy and learned of schemes against himself, he did his duty without anger. That was the humility of one with subtle hearing.

As a result the Kurukshetra war took place. Duryodhana and his brothers were destroyed. Rule without hearing and humility led only to ruin.

To reflect on

Do you speak differently, more humbly, once you have really listened to someone, and when did you last test this?
