Explanation

There are many who have no chance to learn from books. Some lack means, some lack time, some lack the ability to read. To them Valluvar offers this comforting way: if you have not learned, then listen. Hearing is the way of knowledge easily available to everyone. Each person who has ears can gain the wealth of hearing.

'Orkaththin oothrunthunai' means a supporting staff in weakness. 'Orkam' stands for weakness, poverty and suffering. As an old man holds a staff and walks, one who is weak in trouble can hold the counsel he has heard and stand. Hearing is for him like the stick in the hand; it holds him up.

Some take 'katrilan' as one who has not learned books, and others as one who has not learned properly. In both, hearing serves him not as a substitute for learning but as a first step to learning. One who has gained knowledge by hearing may in time begin to learn as well.

This staff comparison continues in the next verse. There he says the words of the good are like a staff on slippery ground. Together they confirm that hearing is a tool that holds us up in the stumbles of life.

In life today elderly people and villagers who had no chance to study have gained knowledge by listening to songs, stories and talks. Today there is plenty of chance to hear good talks on phones and radios. When one cannot learn, hearing is not a lack; it is a way.

A story

Shabari

In the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana is the story of the woman ascetic Shabari. Shabari was a woman of a hunter family. She was not one who had studied books, and she could neither read nor write. But she served in the hermitage of the sage Matanga. When the sages spoke philosophy or discussed austerity, she would sit near and listen with care.

At the end of his life, as he left the world, Matanga gave Shabari a promise: 'A prince named Rama will come here one day. Wait for him until he comes. When you see him you will be freed.' Trusting that word, Shabari waited for years.

Every day she plucked wild fruits, tasted them, and put the sweet ones aside. She kept the hermitage always clean, since Rama could come on any day. Her whole faith rested on words she had heard.

One day Rama and Lakshmana, searching for Sita, reached Shabari's hermitage. She welcomed them lovingly and offered the fruits she had gathered. Rama accepted them. Then, tradition says, he also asked her and heard from her hints about the way to search for Sita. She told Rama many truths she had heard in her teacher's time.

Shabari, without book-knowledge, won Rama's love through the support of hearing. In the end, Valmiki says, she attained the supreme state by the power of her austerity. Shabari is the living form of 'orkaththin ooththrunthunai': in old age and loneliness it was the faith in the words she had heard that held her up.
